MOUNTAIN BIKING: Cape Horn Trail

Single Tracks →

Description

This is an intermediate trail that requires some technical skills to navigate. The narrow uphill trail features small boulders and exposed tree roots throughout. Although the trail is only moderately steep in most sections, (one short, nearly unclimbable section) the terrain makes for a challenging climb. The return trip is the reward...fast and fun! This is probably not a trail suited for beginners. A fairly high level of fitness is needed for the climb as well.

Directions

From Bear Valley drive approximately 5 miles on Highway 4 to the Northeast end of Lake Alpine. Turn right on access road to Silver Valley Campground and travel for approximately 1/2 mile. A Forest Service sign marks the start of the trail straight ahead just before the road turns up the hill to the right into the campground. Less than 1/4 mile ahead you arrive at a fork in in the trail. At the fork there's a sign pointing to Duck Lake straight ahead and Emigrant trail to the left. Take Emigrant Trail; this is the trail to Cape Horn. Approximately 1/4 mile past the fork you will come upon a barbed wire fence with a gate. Go through the gate and close it behind you. Proceed approximately 1 1/2 miles uphill to Cape Horn. The trail ends at Cape Horn. Turn around and follow the trail downhill back to the access road at Silver Valley Campground.
