If you park a the Game Check station, you ride north on FS 44 for one mile until you reach a closed FS road 44B. You take this road around the ridge for ten miles, to lollipop back to where you parked. Watch out on this trail because there are Bears and briers! Once on 44B there is a fairly steady but long climb, followed by a wicked fast downhill. On the downhill you will have to dodge briers and yell yo bear when, not if, you run across them!
There are miles and miles of closed FS roads you can ride in this area, and FS 44 has some pretty good primitive campsites along the entire length of the road. I recommend getting a detailed road map of the area.
From Helen, drive one mile north on GA 75/17. Cross river and take right on FS 44 (this entrance may be closed so you may have to drive a couple more miles down the road until you reach the other entrance to FS 44) Go 2.9 miles on 44 to Game Check station. You can park pretty much anywhere on this road, the mileage for the trail starts at the Game Check station.
